ELC new sky high release!

I honestly don’t think they’re hated by anyone here John. But when a company is always raising prices in fairly significant amounts , people are going to express their thoughts on the matter. I have a few ELC jackets that I’m very happy with and would like to own a few more, but the price differences between the jackets I currently have and the ones I’d like to own is significant enough to prevent me from buying new jackets . Others may disagree and that’s ok . But there’s no hate here for Eastman .

I love Eastman products, got a fair bit of it too. But it’s getting too pricey for me now. Shame , I have been working my way through their catalog since the late 90’s . I could always go without central heating for a few months though to afford another A-2 !

I certainly agree with you John. I think what makes ELC the subject of much conversation is that they are a top tier manufacturer of quality clothing . Unlike others who just make jackets, ELC has other lines of clothing as well. When a company like GW raises prices it’s on just jackets . When ELC raises prices it’s on their jackets one time, then it’s on their clothing line the next, then it’s on their accessories the next time. The point being is that it seems that ELC is having price increases a few different times during the year, whereas a company who just makes jackets may have only that one price increase a year . Just my thoughts on the matter .

To put my opinion in perspective, I love my ELC Irvin, absolutely one of my favourite jackets.

I don't hate ELC at all but the way they're raised their prices over the last few years has priced them out of what I'm willing to pay.

If you're some hot shot making loads of cash in your job then you'll probably be completely unaware how some people have to live and how these kinds of prices are beyond what a lot of folk are willing, let alone able, to pay.

There's obviously also a few cashed up guys here who get in a snot when some mere mortals pipe up and say they can't afford what ELC is asking.

If you've got enough to laugh off ELC prices, then fair play to you and enjoy the fact you can buy what you like. At the same token don't be a cashed up snob looking down at people who can't splash out that kind of money.

FWIW, I recently bought a pair of Gary and John Lofgren's Tanker boots in russet. Hell yeah they were expensive, but they're beautifully made, solidly constructed, wear like iron and look cool as hell. If you spend your day on your feet like I do, you appreciate quality boots. IMHO, Lofgren boots are worth every penny.

Fair points, all. I'm certainly glad I bought my Ostmann about 24-18 months ago when it was $1400 from HPA. Today it's $1675 I believe. Most delightful jacket I own including a GW. Now? Regretfully I just can't afford what they cost, much as I'd love to own another- or three.

I don't get the consternation. These boots are made from vegetable tanned horsehide, made in Japan, triple stitched uppers, double stitched welt, partially hand stitched. Imported. Probably small production run. Those kind of things cost money. I don't think the price is that excessive at all.

I spend all day (and often all night on my feet) Grant when I'm working. My issue boots are 500 Euros (roughly under half the price of those new ELC ones) which isn't necessarily cheap but they're apparently rated up to at least 5,000km and in all conditions and terrain.

Something tells me those ELC boots would have a hard time emulating that.

It's silly though, if you're only talking quality and using a boot for hour after hour for being on your feet "all day", you don't need to spend 1,000 quid on boots. Most modern mil spec boots are superior for less money than those ELC ones.

I understand the tone and frustration about the luxury of it all...

If I had the means a pair of 9.5 would already be in box with me as the receiver.

Love the history, the look, color, skin, sole... and the maker, ie Lofgren, just fabulous.

I love those! How are they breaking in?

I don’t think anybody hates them, nearly all of us have bought ELC products at one time or other, but now most of us, especially in these fiscally difficult times, can no longer afford them. As I’ve said several times, I don’t blame them for charging what their target market will tolerate, but when you’ve been buying a company’s products for many years, and they raise their prices beyond your means and you’re no longer able to, you’re bound to be unhappy.
