Ritchy,
Use this tool , leave mark on the leather , as first step. As result, the distance between each mark is even.
Then, use this tool, punch thru the leather, as second step. As result, the needle is able to go thru the leather very easy.

I'm surprised they allowed you on a ship with that non-regulation cap.
Come to think of it -- I'm surprised they let you on with a G-1 since you aren't Navy personnel!
I used to get withering looks from Navy folks when I wore my G-1 around Great Lakes Training Center!

Don't wear this one often, usually when it's a bit cold and I'm about to do something I wouldn't do in my other jackets Never really warmed up to G-1s but it's not a bad looking jacket. Bought it 4 years ago for $200 in Fr. Lauderdale. Have not noticed until today that there are some stich-holes from a name tag. Anyone remind me how old this jacket is please

The 7823E (as) series jackets were produced startling in 1971 so this one could be from that period forward .Don't wear this one often, usually when it's a bit cold and I'm about to do something I wouldn't do in my other jackets

Navy day here in Vienna today. original A-2 Deck Jacket in the morning for the doggo walk, and now it's the ELC M-422a for a first visit of one of the Viennese Christmas markets in the city centre with the missus... will sneak in some pictures later maybe....

No need to. The book is always better than the movie.
ah well I think a Navy jacket always brings out the best of every man gentlemanly enough to wear one ..
so I would say the movie is at least just as great as the book in that case
