What kind of coating is on the skin of a B-3

Acrylic paint with a clear top coat. Sweeting describes how they were refinished in theatre by spraying.
I think the actual coating is called the Corseal process.

I have a Eastman M-445, snap pockets, great jackets, but the coating seems a little soft, and no very resilient, wondering if a coating would help?

The original I have an H.L Block has a thick coating, very strong, where the leather hasn't died, which is just one sleeve.

can anyone help?

Didn't know Eastman made an M-445. I'd like to see that. I would be very wary of re-coating a shearling jacket, from what I've heard the results are not great. AAF depot redyes are horrible, I understand-admittedly that was using the limited technology they had available to them. I know there are leather repair specialists who I believe do such things-motorcycle leather repairers-might be worth talking to one of them? Byson leather here in the UK seem to have the right idea, I haven't used them but their website seems very comprehensive, I'm sure they would at least be able to advise.

I think you have an Anj-4. Some of the early ELC jackets had very soft skins and a topcoat prone to flaking.
Some dry cleaning companies will paint your jacket for you. My advice would be to leave it alone.
Can we see some photos?
I like old worn jackets more than new ones!

There is a product called Tan-Kote it is a protective clear coat. I had an A-2 that looked near new, however around the collar the top coat had worn off, and left a dark ring in the unprotected leather. I cleaned the area as best possible, and brush coated the area, it turned out looking much better. I also used it on the back collar of a dyed but uncoated shearling jacket. The coating stiffened up the uncoated skin, but was still flexable, and did not flake. You can pick this stuff up on the bay for cheap, and give it a test area, might work out for you.

A high quality acrylic paint will refurbish an old shearling well. Createx brand will darken the light tan exposed from cracking finish, seal it, and it won't crack again. You can get a bottle of light and dark brown for mixing an odd shade and you'll hardly notice it's there. Just wipe into the cracks and wipe off. It transparent so it wont dye the rest of the leather and affect the finish. This is not what was done back in the day, but I have done it and it works nicely. If the leather is still strong but the finish is failing, this will work fine, otherwise nothing will fix bad leather.
