We lived very close by to the old 388th BG H base at Knettishall and would often walk the dogs over there, perhaps stopping to have a chat with old Percy Prentice* who seemed to be always pottering about keeping the memorial [located at was the entrance to the HQ site] tidy. The some bits of perimeter track remain and in places you can see vehicle and bicycle tyre tracks, boot prints, marks left by dog paws and birds that were made when the concrete was still a bit soft during construction.
Percy was one of the local kids who hung about the GI's on the airfield so much they adopted him as a mascot. A small size uniform was made for him and he can be seen wearing wearing it in this photo with Gen. Doolittle. Percy was a lovely chap who it was a privilege to have known. He passed in 2018.

The Short Stirling was big machine indeed. Nearly five metres (16 ft) longer than the Avro Lancaster and 4 mt (13 ft) longer than the B-17.
