This well-worn Sunderland III, W4004/Z of No 10 Squadron RAAF, has just been winched out of the water in preparation for an overhaul at Mount Batten, January 1943. The aircraft fell victim to the Luftwaffe on 17 May, when it was shot down by a Ju88C of V/KG 40 over the Bay of Biscay. Its crew of 12, led by Flight Lieutenant M K Kenzie, were all lost

The Italian submarine REGINALDO GIULIANI under machine-gun attack from a Short Sunderland of No. 10 Squadron RAAF in the Bay of Biscay. Three Sunderlands were involved in the action but were ordered to continue their anti-shipping patrol before a concerted attack could take place. The submarine, which was sailing from Bordeaux for the Far East, was attacked on the following day by a Vickers Wellington of No. 304 Polish Bomber Squadron RAF, and was forced to put into Santander, Spain, having sustained severe damage and a number of casualties.

The attack on U-106, a Type IXB U-boat responsible for sinking 22 merchant ships, by Sunderland aircraft of 228 and 461 Squadrons based at Pembroke Dock, 2 August 1943. Here DV968/M of No 461 Squadron RAAF is making its attack run, strafing the U-boats's decks to suppress anti-aircraft fire before releasing its depth charges.

Oblique aerial showing Short Sunderland Mark III, DV968 'M', of No. 461 Squadron RAAF, straddling a German type IXb submarine, U-106, with depth charges in the Bay of Biscay. The photograph was taken from Sunderland Mark III, JM708 'N', of No. 228 Squadron RAF, which also joined in the attack, and completed the 'kill' when the crew abandoned the stricken U-boat and blew the demolition charges.
