At sea, Bay of Biscay. 1943-07-01. Two Sunderlands attacked a U-boat and sank it. The fight, which was graphically recorded on the aircraft's cameras, ended in the submarine exploding-with all the violence of a depth charge going off, but the film ran out one second before the U-boat blew up. The pilot of one Sunderland from No. 461 Squadron RAAF was an Australian, 401346 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) I. A. F. Clarke of Footscray, Vic and the other pilot was Flt Lt R. D. Hanbury of Ringwood, Hants. After the attacks the U-boat was seen to be down by the stern with smoke pouring from her aft. Members of the crew were in the water. It was shortly after this that the submarine blew up and sank vertically by the stern.
