A bit late to the party, but wanted to point out the placement of the eyelets on the collar that the elastic strap connects to.
They face forward, not backward. That would imply that the strap placed around the pilot's face would make sense.

Just that the strap does have a function and I have employed it...pull it up onto the forehead and the collar pops up and stays up. Even if you look like Benny Hill
