Help requested - How to remove white deposit from jacket

Hi there,

This is my first post, though I have been "lurking" for a few months (and learning a lot!).

I have a newish Vanson motorcycle jacket, which is made of nice (at least it looks nice) thick steerhide, the problem is that since I got the jacket damp (once, and not actually wet - just damp) a white deposit has appeared on all parts of the jacket, it is easy enough to remove with a cloth but returns every time (not always in the same place, random - all over the jacket) - even when the jacket is just hung in my spare room, which is absolutely dry and houses other jackets which do not show this deposit.

I would really like someone to suggest what I could do to get rid of this recurring problem, since it makes the jacket pretty near unwearable.

Thanks for reading, and congratulations on a really great, informative, forum.

Cheers,

Andy

Hello Andy,
Sound like you have some white mold issues. I had it happen once
and I found a cure. I used a leather product called Lexol PH. You
can find it at most automotive care dealers. It's a
vintage leather cleaner that is PH balanced as to not negatively
effect the leather. I started with a small application, and worked
my way up until the problem ceased to come back.
Make sure that you let the jacket dry completely before storing again.
Also, make sure to remove all the cleaner as suggested on the bottle.

Hi Tankbuster

Thanks so much for your advice - brilliant, I've ordered the Lexol PH already and am very relieved to have a solution to this problem.

Very much appreciated - fantastic forum and members.

Cheers,

No problem. It may be wise to make sure the
area where you are storing you jackets does
not reach above 55% humidity. I've found that
if you keep air cirulation (fan) and the humidity
level at or below 55%, your odds of having any
kind of problems are slim to none.
Best of luck!
