Got the knits, I'll have this thing done tomorrow. I'm pretty happy with the way it is turning out.

Hi, Mark,

Looking very good - looking forward to today or tomorrow for the finished jacket.

Wow, that's lookin really nice! So, you're not going to have to tear this apart for the pattern? BTW, my first A-1 was alot like the one you've made, check it out... It was nice but the stiff horse hide pockets made it less than perfect.

I'm as done as I'm going to get tonight, fighting a massive cold anyway...

Not too bad, but still some things I need to tweak on the pattern. Need to take about 3-4 inches off the tum, add about 3 inches to the "reach" across the shoulders and arm, and add another 1-2 inches to the sleeve length. Right now I'd call this a (vintage) 44 stout.
Had a hell of a time with the buttonholes, the cotton twill I'm making this out of does not cut cleanly and leaves the buttonholes looking ragged, which they aren't, really. Also need to measure the pockets from the true centerline, leaving them asymmetrical like on the Dubow does not look right with buttons.
Cheers
Mark

You got it .... mine are exactly 5" apart, with the 2.5" mark being right in the centre of the buttonhole.

Mostly complete, still need to get the tool for the bottom snaps. It worked out OK, but some things I need to change on the next one as mentioned in the previous post.
Cheers

tweek the little details but not the general fit, I think it'll be just about perfect in that area once you lengthen the sleeves a bit, not too tight and not too loose! Oh and I think you'll be happy with your decision to go with snaps, I used to be a big advocate of buttons all the way down until I owned a few that way and came to realize that two buttons in that small area could be a real pain to deal with over time, IMHO. (que all the speeches about how both are period accurate :p ).

From Cushman's, a sort of A-1 variant, and what a beauty!

That looks suspiciously like L.L. Bean's "Cape Leather Blouse" from their 1933 catalog.
Same shawled collar, same tabbed waist same buttoned cuff.
Used to have a pic of the catalog ad but - guess what - can't find it.
Anyway, it was "fully washable"(!) and cost, like, $9.50.
This job probably can't be had at 100x that price.

lost worlds a-1

oh, no! i meant to put this in the all about a-1's thread! sorry! mods, i would appreciate some help...

hey, guys, first post!

this is my lw a-1, 'bout a year's wear. as i remember, 4.0 hh, melanine buttons, and the same lining you find in their a-2 (whatever that is).

picked it up off their sale page, so i feel i received a real good price. granted, it's a 40 and i'm a true 38, so the fit could be better, but a sale's a sale.

How difficult has it been to open and close the buttons? No issue on the 2.5 Oz goatskin model.

It sold on Yahoo Jp auctions for 40,000yen; I was tempted to bid but I was hoping no one would bid and the seller would come down again (the orig listing had been for 60,000yen) but someone put in a late bid so now it's gone. I'd prefer one in black actually, but sort-of regret I let it get away. The jacket was cowhide.

the front was and continues to be very easy. the stitchwork is very strong, but i wonder how long it'll last...

the pockets, on the other hand, are impossible. even harder when i'm not wearing it! i get the feeling that part of the jacket will never settle down.
