THE CHRISTOPHER WARD C9 P2725
This Pilot’s Watch Uses a Very Different Kind of Precious Metal
WATCHES By ANDREW CONNOR
Title should say watch made from a Hawker Hurricane .
Over 70 years ago during the Battle of Britain, Flight Lieutenant Ray Holmes successfully defended Buckingham Palace from an oncoming German Luftwaffe bomber when he rammed the plane with his Hawker Hurricane P2725. A few years ago, the wreckage from that plane was excavated from underneath the streets of London, and now some of the aluminum from Home’s Hurricane is being used in a special edition by British watch brand Christopher Ward.
Now, the (deep breath) Christopher Ward C9 P2725 TM-B Limited Edition is the latest addition to the brand’s line of aviation-themed watches. The black, sandblasted case comes in at a relatively large 43mm in diameter and had a dial reminiscent of a Hurricane’s dashboard panel with “old radium” colored lume and red accents. The watch is powered by a Swiss-made Valgranges A07.161 automatic movement, chosen specifically for its power reserve gauge – which, on the C9, recalls the Hurricane’s altimeter, according to the brand. And that precious aluminum from Holme’s plane? That’s featured on the back of the watch case, with an engraving of a map of central London.
Given the provenance of the metal used, the price isn’t exactly cheap, especially for a value-oriented brand like Christopher Ward. It’ll set you back $ 2,850. Still, it’s certainly going to be of interest to WWII and watch buffs, alike. The watch is available for pre-order now, with the final product shipping in October.
