Star Sportswear Mfg Co Factory Locations

Since I live very close to Lynn Massachusetts I thought I would like to locate and visit the locations where the Star Sportswear Manufacturing’s factory was located. Star made some of the nicest A-2 and G-1 jackets in their day.

I did some research at the Lynn Public Library in the old City Directories and came up with the following addresses.

1934 - Star Sportswear Mfg was listed as being at 429 Washington Street in Lynn.

in 1945 they moved to 278 Broad Street, 7th Floor, also in downtown Lynn, in the old shoe factory neighbourhood.

Then in the 1960 directory Star Sportswear Mfg was listed at two locations, 278 Broad Street 7th Floor and 50 Marshall’s Wharf right around the corner. The 1961 Lynn City Directory shows them only at the Marshall’s Wharf address until the last year I looked which was 1975.

The corporate officers listed were Sam Kurland, President amd James Kurland, Treasurer from 1934 through 1968. The 1975 directory lists an E Sawyer as Treasurer.

I went looking for the buildings to photograph. 429 Washington Street is still standing. It is right in downtown Lynn. Photo is attached.

Unfortunately the 278 Broad Street and the 50 Marshall’s Wharf addresses no longer exist. Both buildings perished in the great Lynn Fire of November 28th, 1981, that destroyed 17 buildings in the old shoe factory section of downtown. Today the site is occupied by North Shore Connunity College.

There is no current listing for Star Sportswear Manufacturing anywhere in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

I wish one of the factories were still open from the original A2 manufactures from WWII to get a glimpse of day to day operations. I believe Spiewak, United Sheeplined and Cooper we’re here in NJ. You’d never know it now. Interesting info on the Star company.

Haven't checked my Eastmans A2 jacket manual but think all the addresses of the original makers are listed within.

Well, the Broad Street and Marshall’s Wharf addresses are significant as well. Star made beautiful G-1 jackets at both those addresses. But, alas, those buildings are long gone as a result of the Lynn Fire of 1981.

They eventually moved to the area of Granite and Bickerton Street.
I’ve got an old wooden sign that was attached to a telephone pole on Western Ave, pointing down Granite Street. This area turned into The Stadium Condos and F.B. Harris Corporation.

Very interesting particularly as my half belt, believed to be late 40’s/early 50’s is a Field & Stream and also has Gordon and Ferguson as part of the label!
