Repro Jacket Makers - A few signposts to commonly read and popular threads about flying jacket repro makers

Buying a “proper” repro flying jacket is for most people a big, and confusing, step. I've put this thread together with some wise words from other members to highlight some of the most read threads on this subject. It's not meant to be the last word on the subject and probably never could be.

Screenshot 2023-12-15 at 22.37.05.png

It usually requires more careful consideration about sizing and fit than people give their everyday clothes. Most of us here have learnt the hard way with jackets that for one reason or another don’t quite work. As many jacket makers charge the full cost up front this can be a “leap in the dark” unless you’re confident with the work of that maker and know your size/ideal fit (please do read the threads on that subject)

This thread aims to provide some signposts to other existing threads which have been commonly posted to and have been popular discussion threads about the work of the most active repro jacket makers. The views expressed are personal and I don’t make any comment or judgement about the discussions in these threads.

Hopefully these signposts will give new members somewhere to start when looking at the work of repro makers and a sense of the discussion that their work generates. The discussion can include the situation with order/wait times but it’s important to bear in mind that this will only ever be accurate at the time of the post. A little research will also reveal that makers can and do change and improve their offerings over time.

This thread is no substitute for wider and more extensive reading on the forum and beyond about the work of particular makers and it’s recommended that these threads are simply a good jumping off point if you’re considering a particular maker for a flying jacket. These are not the only threads discussing the makers repro jackets and may not present the up to date position with them.

QUESTIONS?

I’d recommend that before you ask questions please take the time to read up a little as it may be that the answer you’re after is already out there. Experienced forum members have long been happy to offer advice and opinions but as enthusiasts we also hope to encourage your deeper interest with a bit of personal research.

And while you're at it, if you're new here, why not take a little time to introduce yourself and tell us about your interest in jackets here:

If, once you’ve done some research, you have a question please use the threads below or other more subject specific threads to ask. That way we can keep this information easily accessible (and if the mods agree, stickied) - Thanks !

There are fewer makers offering wartime accurate RAF “Irvin” style repros and these are some well read threads that have discussed their offerings. You may find they don't list all the variations they make so getting in touch may get you the up to date picture:

Agreed John. I didn't find any discussion threads for those mentioned but there would be a place for them. Be interesting to see similar discussion threads to those we have covering ELC, Aero, BK, Avi and Fivestar.

Although Sefton Clothing Co. are no longer making jackets their A-2’s do crop up from time to time and there was a pretty decent thread started by B-Man2 a couple of years ago.

Just a note...I've worn that jacket Art Garfunkel is wearing. It was at an RBF show in Pasadena in 1994. I almost bought it.

What is the origin of the photo? I feel like I should know, but no idea!
