I reckon the max speed of 40mph is probably a shade optimistic ;)

Going back to this Tim, I think the car in the photo is a Vauxhall 14/6 [14 HP, 6 cylinder], if I'm right that could reach about 70 tops.

I had and restored a 1937 Morris 14/6 and that had a similar kind of 'performance'. Not really built for speed as Britain didn't have much of a fast road network. Those long stroke pre war cars had lots of low torque but the engine was working hard at full chat. Tax was also based on horsepower hence the popularity of smaller motors.

Hell … you just can’t find a “Hoppa-Long, Cassidy Sweater” like that anymore .
