Possibly a stupid question - depot re-dyed A-2s

I'm wondering about the program of depot re-dying of jackets during WW2. Why were jackets being re-dyed? I wonder how much beating around a jacket would need to take before it required re-dying.

Any information, details or facts about the depot re-dying process would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Matt

A2s were redyed during the War and many were also refurbished during the Korean War. Technical Order 13-1-10, dated 16 Oct 1943 gives the rationale behind the "refinishing" of shearling jackets and there are some similarities with A2s. Service wear meant that many A2s were cleaned and repaired and then re-dyed or re-sprayed. The new dye was painted or sprayed on (or a combination of both). Pages 124-5 of Combat Flying Clothing describes the process in detail.
