I have always been fascinated by the "Black Projects" and certainly it is on the top of my wish-list. This set is just a small part of a bigger group of uniforms that belonged to USAF Col. Tom "Torch" Darner. He was a test pilot for the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk, flying with the legendary "Baja Scorpions". This unit was established as a Joint Test Force of Lockheed and Air Force personnel, responsible for performing flight test missions for the F-117 at Groom Lake, A.K.A "Area 51", Nevada.
The project began in 1975; designed, tested, and deployed under a veil of secrecy. Very few people in the Pentagon knew the program even existed, until it was revealed to the public in 1988. This jet was the world’s first operational aircraft aimed at exploiting the then emerging stealth technology.
The F-117 was widely publicized for its role in the Persian Gulf War of 1991. Although it was commonly referred to as the "Stealth Fighter", it was strictly an attack aircraft.
This set features his helmet bag, helmet liner, flying gloves, and even his sunglasses. The main item certainly is the Cold Weather Flyers Jacket; the first pattern of today's CWU-45/P.
This jacket is in great condition and definitely has seen action during its service. It even has the inner pocket with the orange rescue panel present.
Left chest depicts the name tag, printed MAJ TOM "TORCH" DARNER.
Right chest depicts the "AF SYSTEMS COMMAND" patch.
Left arm depicts the extremely rare "BAJA SCORPIONS" patch.
Right arm depicts the extremely rare "SCORPION FLT TEST" patch.
