This is certainly one of the rarest USN/USMC flight jackets, the elusive AL-1.
Adopted after WWII, this jacket was intended to replace the heavy fur flight jackets. Manufactured between 1947 and 1952, the AL-1 had a very unique design, bearing a field jacket-like appearance, with a windproof cotton shell and alpaca wool lining. The front of the jacket has a zipper/button closure, and wool knit is installed at the openings of the upper left and right hand pockets. There are inner pockets on the left and right, and the left one has a zipper that can be opened and closed without opening the front zipper. The right inner pocket has a button closure. There is a button-adjustable strap at the internal waist for a better fit. The sleeve has a built-in knit and comes with a zipper.
This specific example was made by the prolific Aviators Clothing Co. Inc. under contract No. N383S-74103 in fiscal year, 1951.
The condition of this jacket is mint, considering it is over 70 years old. All parts are original to the jacket.
This example comes in a massive size 48, which is the biggest I have seen so far for this specific model. A rare find indeed.
Say no more, enjoy it!
Regards,
Jorge
