Often referred to as the King of the fishtail parkas, the M-1948 Parka is probably the rarest and most sought-after model ever issued. Needless to say, finding an example in New Old Stock condition complete with the even rarer alpaca wool liner becomes the holy grail for a collector.
After World War II, the U.S. Army developed a combat ensemble that provided the flexibility of a coat and better layering under extremely cold conditions: the M-1948 Parka-Shell and the M-1948 Parka Liner.
No expense was spared in making this model. The finest materials were used to combat the severe Korean winters.
The parka-shell is made of wind-resistant cotton sateen in Olive Drab shade 7 and features a snap-and-slide fastener closure, using a heavy-duty Talon zipper, slit front pockets, an arm pocket on the upper left sleeve for pencils and cigarettes, and an OD wool-lined hood trimmed with coyote fur. The hooded parka liner was constructed of alpaca wool and composed of wool-pile cloth in Olive Drab shade 30A. Each liner also has a chest pocket, which is unique to the M-1948.
These parkas are massive and of extremely high quality, which is the reason they were only produced for one year and in very limited numbers. This model is the predecessor of the M-1951 Parka.
The condition of this jacket is immaculate and impossible to upgrade. All parts are original and functional. It's hard to believe it is over 70 years old and still has the cutter tag attached to the pocket.
This kit comes in a highly desirable size Large, which makes it even scarcer.
