M422a Gordon Ferguson Co.

Hi Folks,

I'd like to ask about your opinion about this interesting M422a jacket made by Gordon Ferguson Co.[thankfully that design pattern is a one-looker to identify the manufacturer, pocket, and collar tab]. I'd like to ask about your opinion, regarding this dark brown lining, not a salmon color like usually M422a made by Gordon Ferguson. Also, the zipper, a blackened Talon on M422a is a bit strange, or more unique to see older blackened zipper type [as on M422 USN jackets].

I received great information from two forum members [Mulceber and B-Man2 - thanks a lot!!!], that the jacket potentially was refurbished by USN - what non-regulatory lining color, no label, and new fur on the collar can indicate. As a USN flight jacket noob, I'm really curious about your opinion, regarding these non-regulatory lining color and blackened zipper.

Thanks

Looking at those terrible knits and the mouton color, I respectfully disagree that this was refurbished by the USN. Looks more like someone sewed on seamed knit cuffs and a civi waist knit and called it a day. Without better photos of the collar and lining, it's anyone's guess where those came from.

Hi Erwin
I think your post needs some clarification. I said the knits and collar looked to have been replaced at some point and that the knits were NOT the correct ones for the jacket. I NEVER said that those items looked to have been replaced by USN riggers or personal.

Yeah, that was my call, more because it looks like the jacket was totally reconstructed, much like my 55J14, which Steve Sellers identified as a rigger reconstruction.

I should add that, if it was a reconstruction, I'm not imagining this taking place during WW2, but much later - like the '60s.

Indeed, I wrote a bit messy post, so sorry for any confusion here. Just wanted to ask you guys, if the G&F m422a with brown lining is something non-regulatory to see [especially with a blackened zipper].

Yeah, the blackened zipper is what I find especially perplexing. Never seen an A-series jacket with one. The closest are the HL Block ones that sometimes have a brass zipper.
Sorry, what do you mean by A-series jacket?

Hey Folks,

Finally received this m422a jacket made by Gordon Ferguson [based on comparison to other jackets, it is 42 size], looks like it was worth waiting for a bit. It looks like in fact knits were replaced, not crying too much, these are made from coarse wool, even when not a contract one, still someone did a great job to replace knitted elements. If can get nicer than available from Osaka, would consider a replacement.

I'd appreciate your help regarding contract ID identification.

The zipper is an interesting thing here, as not too many Gordon Ferguson jackets had blackened Talons and brown lining.

Respectfully:
Great Goatskin… alll others not legit…and NO WAY … any US official organization would ever have done a refurbishment like that…but with a bit of skill and NOS parts… a great jacket.

Hey Folks,

Based on your experience, is there any chance of finding out about what contract should this jacket have? Thanks!

WOW, that is an amazing jacket from Bazelot's post! I assumed that it could be an NXs 416, but the back panel stitchings look a bit different if I see it correctly. Thanks for Your help!
Pleasure!
G&F had 2 or 3 variants of the Nx416(..).
Full Gear can say more about it.
Travelling right now but can get all details if needed after Dec10th.
