G-1 ID

Hi, all, I understand this is the forum with a wealth of knowledge for assistance in identifying provenance of vintage jackets.

I have two G-1s, one manufactured by Orchard and the other by Brill. Pics of tags are below. I'm curious as to the date of these and whether they're calf or goatskin (if this can't be determined in the absence of pics, I will take some additional). Thanks for letting me ask some questions!

'86 and '71! Cool. Thanks very much!

Any way to tell if goatskin or regular (calf?) leather from the tags? Should I post more pics?

All the G-1s military issue should have been in goat, haven't heard/read if any were made of calf or horse, if so would be pretty rare occasion, if I'm wrong someone here should know for sure. Not from the label, Goat is more a pebbly grain, detail pics would be good.

I think that from the mid-seventies onwards for a period, suppliers were using cowhide pressed to look like goat if I am not mistaken.

Does that mean they pressed a goat like grain into the hide, and did that because cow was cheaper to procure than goat? I suppose you get a lot more skins out of 1 cow than you would out of 1 goat.

You can usually feel the difference between hides in the wearing, goat is thinner and lighter than cow, is more abrasion resistant and doesn't stretch if at all.

Paul is right. They were cow with the grain pattern imprinted. Yes, I would guess that the cost of production would be way less.

There were cow with the grain pattern imprinted, but the imprint wasn't as good to resemble goat very much. It just looked like a grainy hide with fake grain.
I have one Brill from 1987 like that. I like it's "fakiness" though because it screams 80s.

You guys provide a wealth of information. Thanks!

In addition to the question about the hides, which, if either, of these has a mouton collar?

Here are some more pics:

I'm on my phone and Cant verify but, Wasn't the 7823C the last with the mouton, before it went synthetic?

Is that right? That would make sense as the collar on the Brill jacket feels softer and more natural than the collar on the Orchard. Thanks!

This what I found on the net, there's lots of info out there but in a nut shell this link gives a good idea of G-1's and examples of different manufacturers

http://moorecustom.com/jackets/Moore_Jackets_navy.htm

It states the 7823C was the last with the mouton, but this could vary due to manufacturers I suppose, the Mil spec ones that is.

in the early 90's My wife and I walked into an upmarket 'chinese' jacket shop in Sydneys rather expensive QVB building. They had some repro (poor quality) G-1's for a hefty at the time $700 which I was just looking over in amusement, the shop assistant kept telling me that 'these are her best jacket, real faux leather and real faux wool collar' Not sure if she understood what faux means but it was hard not to laugh... ;)
