Does anybody know the real designation ('wool A-1')

Does anybody know what this is really called?
Often called an 'A-1', but I can't believe that it is the same as the leather flight jacket. Is it even an USAAC/USAAF jacket rather than an army garment? Here's an original:

I've always been puzzled by it, too. The few originals I've seen (in photographs) sure look like A-1s...but who would design a wool shelled jacket for use in open cockpit planes? There's no doubt that wool can provide excellent insulation, but almost any material on earth would be more windproof.
