atrociously overpriced repros

I don't know what terrible thing I did to deserve this, but somehow I got on the J. L. Powell mailing list and recently received one of their catalogs. In a world of overpriced crap this company takes the biscuit.

$1200 for an ugly "G-1"? Why not?

Or 2 grand for a B-7....

(Maybe it's dead-on accurate, but c'mon, a "limited edition"?)

But my favorite is the $1400 "Alvin" RAF flight jacket. Hilarious.

Originally designed by the Alvin (and the Chipmunks) Parachute Company in the 1930s and then adapted for combat by the RAF, this jacket was standard issue during the Battle of Britain. Our obsession with authenticity means we got all the details right -- the rugged leather, the shearling, the gusseted underarms for freedom of movement. The zippered cuffs, a holdover from the days of open cockpit flying, remained even after the planes had been replaced. During World War II, it was such a valued piece of equipment that when shearling supplies were tight and these jackets were scarce, the nighttime RAF bomber pilots would hand them off to the daytime B-17 and Liberator crews each morning. And vice-versa, of course. We’re quite certain you’ll also have a few friends asking to swap their jackets for yours. We doubt you’ll be so accommodating. Made in the USA.

Available in RAF Brown.

By using the Alvin name, they won't have to worry about being sued for trademark infringement  by the current owners of the Irvine name, Aviation Leathercraft, whose ad writers are not unfamiliar with hyperbole. *sniff* besides, why would anyone want to buy an Alvin when they can get a genuine Irvin labeled coat for half the cost ?

So we've all been wrong for years. It was Leslie Alvin who designed the Alvin jacket. It's a truly remarkable copy of the iconic Alvin jacket. Well worth the money.  ;)

When and where were the Irvin jackets handed off to USAAF pilots for their daytime missions??? Where do they get these gems??? What's this "we got the details right" crap??
