This is going to be an unpopular opinion, allow me to preface it by saying I respect this community and its expertise immensely. I’m a huge fan of G-1s and A-2s.
The Coopers and Saddlery jackets are every bit as important as the originals.
Why might that be?
Because they were actually issued...
So,
there’s a local New Years Eve dance at an old 1930’s USAAC hangar. I’ll be calling today to see if they’d like my Stearman as a backdrop. My wife wants to go and period dress or uniforms are encouraged.
I was wondering, can anybody recommend a good source for an enlisted man’s Ike Jacket...
Frank Tallman, 1957 in San Diego. Not a movie star, or famous, but in plenty of movies exhibiting flying skill, to include most of the aviation movie flying associated with the actors pictured in these threads. Actual Naval Aviator. The real deal. (Of course Steve McQueen was also a capable pilot)
it also bears repeating, with absolutely no scorn meant and nothing but concern for people understanding the importance of these things, that wearing those wings or that grade insignia is simply not considered appropriate behavior by those who’ve earned them.
This group is an amazing culture of...
The only patch I can think of you’d be allowed to wear that wasn’t directly associated with your current unit would be a flag, a fighter weapons school patch or an instrument flying school patch. The Army has something like that, but not the Air Force.
That jacket is real and the rank insignia...
Utterly bullcrap.
- Although the Major’s oak leaves are commensurate with the senior pilot wings, they aren’t in the right place. They should be flush with the top of the arm seam line. The seamstresses at Air Force dry cleaners know their AFIs cold and would never sew those on incorrectly...
All good points. The cool thing about the Cooper is that although it lacks many original maker details the reproductions feature, it is a genuine issue, Milspec jacket. There’s a certain amount of cachet to that. I also agree that the Saddlery jacket is nicer than the Cooper.
I can understand the sentiment that these Coopers and others are not as nice as an original issue A-2. They aren’t.
But I would humbly assert that it’s an apples to oranges comparison.
For two hundred bucks or less, you’re getting a genuine, GI flight jacket. If you’re patient, it’s easy to...
I’ve got a closet full of leather jackets, but the A-2’s I have are Coopers. I really like the Goodyear Acme 42-18775. Everything about it; the shade, the russet knits, the mustard lining, just everything. Does anybody have that one they’d be willing to post pics of?
