I have an old Avirex A-2. I am looking for a recommendation for someone that I can ship the jacket to who can make and sew on a WWII style name tag and apply a AAF stencil to the left shoulder.
I agree. They were work clothes, mass-produced in WWII by the lowest bidder. I have never seen a WWII jacket, but I don’t imagine that they had perfect leather or stitching. And there were a lot of variations in hides and dyes. They are beautiful for what they were. I image that the overall...
I have my eye on a Five Star Rough Wear A-2. I’m trying to decide between their pull-up horsehide and regular mid brown horse hide. Which leather is closer to what was used in WWII?
I have been watching re-runs of the 1960’s T.V. series Twelve O’Clock High. The A-2 jackets look very un-authentic to me. Likely poor quality cowhide commercially made relicas. Also, in the later seasons, they all had American Flag embroidered patches sewn on the right arm. I’ve never seen...

But I don’t know how to decide which...

Correct. Think about when the A-2 was designed. There were no artificial fabrics for shells or linings in existence yet and they were still flying in open cockpits. So, the A-2 was a windbreaker for warm weather. Leather was the only thing they had.
I live in Central FL now and have for the past 28 years. Unfortunately, I only get to wear my leather jackets about a dozen times a year. The rest of the time it’s either too hot, or yes, even too cold, on occasion. As far as length, 5’7” would be no problem in finding an A-2 if you were 135...
