Here is a G-1 that is an E model from 1974 and yet, the patches are from the 1960's...

Perhaps the vet had them removed from an earlier G1 and placed on this in the 1974s. Maybe his earlier G1 was too small for him by then.....

I agree with Andrew. Not a uncommon practice in the Navy to move patches to a new jacket. It was done quite often amongst old hands.
