Probably the most popular flight jacket ever designed; the MA-1 Intermediate Flying Jacket has a long history with the U.S.A.F., spanning from the mid 50's to the late 70's, when it was replaced by the CWU-45/P made of nomex. However, its popularity extended beyond the military, becoming a staple outerwear piece for non-military audiences worldwide.
This specific example, following spec MIL-J-8279B, represents the 3rd model of the MA-1 and was manufactured by Dobbs Industries, Inc. in the fiscal year 1958.
It features early oxygen mask tabs and communication cable snaps, reminiscent of its predecessor, the B-15D.
It's worth noting that the MA-1 seems to also have been adopted by the U.S. Army since 1958, and the order number "QM" suggests that the Army's Quarter Master Corps was responsible for ordering it. Hence, the U.S.A.F. logo was no longer attached to the shoulder.
This jacket is new old stock, which is amazing considering it is 65 years old. All parts are original, and it even retains the cutter tag in the cigarette pocket.
