Need help to identify cloth type please!!

Good evening everyone,

For a restoration project (a ww2 Kriegsmarine jacket) I desperately need to know what type of cloth this is, or what name it has (pictures below, the dark grey / black cloth).
It looks a bit like jeans cloth at the first glance but it seems to be more coarse and a little thicker. Jeans cloth was not pretty common in the german 40s.

Thank you

It's denim. This was introduced in the 30s (37 IIRC without getting my books out) for a lot of work and deck wear.

Is it for the main torso for one of those jackets or the sleeve parts? There are several possibilities.
One is a kind of black blanket fabric the other is a blend of cotton and HBT .
The sleeves have a kind of thick silky rayon black brown and white striped… but black rayon is also OK.

Thanks for the answer so far, it's for the the storm cuffs at the end of the sleeve liners with the internal elastics and meant for the black shorter single row buttoned jacket - the one at the top of pilots post.

Is "Loden" a possible cloth type that could be used?

Brice I just had a look in a couple of books and apparently the coarse denim was also used not just for work/duty dress but also as a lining on occasion.

I'm wondering whether those close up photos that Enigma posted actually show the coarse denim lining and not the blanket style?

Hi Tim,
thanks for chiming in.
Maybe, I can only contribute with the jackets I have and their construction…. but yeah, mabe, since the 1000 years lasting Reich was lacking of almost everything after 1943… so yes, they used what became handy.
I am not where the jackets are, but will be there in a few days… hence only PC photos were /are used…
Can check again after my trip, since I also have the 12. WaSS Pz.Div. version which is a slightly modified KM Maschinenpersonal version ( modified for the HJ. Div in 1944 ).
See below from my PC.

Great pics as always mate!

I was thinking about you the other day as I was reading an article about Frundsberg.

Hope you're not working too hard my friend ;-)

Looking at the pics of Enigma's coat again, is it possible that the main body lining is blanket and the storm cuffs are the coarse denim?

The more I look at those cuffs the more I'm convinced that they are denim (they look exactly the same as that pre-war/wartime denim that the Kriegsmarine utilised so much).

It would make sense if this is a deck coat that the main body lining is blanket for warmth and the "storm cuffs" are denim to be hardwearing.

Ok, I assume there are two possible types of cloth for the cuffs - wool blanket style and a coarse denim style.
I've checked the availability of both types on the current market and it seems that this kind of denim in hard to come by, all kind of modern denim - stretchy, not stretchy, fine, thin, all kinds of colors but not nearly comparable to that german wartime denim.
When it comes to wool blanket material there seems to be lots of stuff available.

I know this is kind of a far out suggestion but…. Is there a possibility that you could search for a similar jacket that’s trashed and falling apart and purchase it to use as a “parts jacket” for making repairs to your jacket .

Good point burt BUT; A similar jacket even in bad condition would cost me at least 500 bucks and it is very likely that those parts I need would be already trashed too.
I've searched for 40s 30s civi jackets that could be made from similar materials but no luck so far
