I don't have personal experience, but I think the two are similar in price and quality, with AVI your sourcing is easier with a very consistent product, but they cannot do Fivestar's customizations. My Fivestar is fantastic!

Horse hide has softened considerably in a good way (I tumbled it in a cool dryer for a good bit which I'll still at and point), but the finish is holding strong, no signs of pealing.
