What was the most expensive jacket you owned and how much did it cost?

Hey HC
Welcome to the forum and congrats on your first post. This one will be an eye opener for some of us I’m sure. Regarding how much money you’ll need to participate in this hobby …….well that could be an easy or a complicated answer.
For example:
If you’re happy with the one jacket you now own …. The answer is $000.00 money. Just wear your G-1 and enjoy it. With a bit of will power you can read VLJ daily and never buy another jacket again…. You can abide by that old saying that “ Being happy is wanting what you have .. and not having what you want” ………. However …. Most of us here have found that a difficult thing to master, myself included…
So if that’s the case with you as well, then you’re going to need to start having what I call a “Cash Stash”. Start squirreling money away and saving it because your dream jacket can pop up for sale at anytime. And when it does you have to be ready to jump on it … or someone else will. How much do you need in your “cash stash”? I’d say $1500 to $2000 if you’re into originals or New Good Wears . $500.-$1000 if you can live with previously owned Good Wears or lower tier jackets . Some will differ with this advice but that’s my advice to you.
Oh … and the most I’ve ever spent on a jacket was about $2500 on a mint original A2 jacket. The painted ones in good condition can go for several thousands more. That’s it for me and once again welcome to VLJ.
Cheers

I totally understand the wife/better half angle...

My worst wasn't a single jacket it was "The B-15C Incident" which I have mentioned on here before. I tend to be obsessive when I get interested in something, and back in 2013 I went through a big Korean air war thing and bought 6 B-15Cs in the space of 3 months. I was raking it in with work but this was just after I blew a ton of cash on a vintage 60s Merc and my wife was pregnant. I slept on the couch for nearly a couple of months because of that. The B-15C Incident will still elicit a torrent of bad language from my Viking missus if it comes up.

Spend it if you've got it and the cash to spare but don't do it if it'll disrupt domestic harmony. Trust me on that one!

Tim, I've always liked that your title - "The B-15 Incident". Really sounds like the name of some event during the Cold War.

As one friend and colleague of mine joked during his period of passion for flight jackets - “most of all I'm afraid that if I suddenly crash or die, then my wife will sell my jackets after my death at the price that I told her how much they cost" ;)

I honestly don't remember which jacket was the most expensive. Probably the second-hand Good Wear at around $700.

And no, don't give a flying fig what my ex thinks.

Of course... there is my current...

But I bought the GW (and so damn many other things) long before I met her, so... ;)

For me, (and I haven't purchased in some years until more recently) it was the new Eastman Irvin 'Fly Weight'. Here in the States, if you visit History Preservation Associates you can see this offering. It is outstanding, as the devil is in the details. But, it resides within the law of diminishing returns. Particularly, since I have a B.O.B. '38 pattern purchased in April 2011 and it has never left the house and lives in a garment bag. I need to sell some jackets!

hmmmm, so Nick, did a little bird tell you GW prices going up next year?
Well honestly, given the rise in the costs of materials, the demand, and the sheer amount of time and talent to make such an utterly top quality product while trying to make a living- I woudn't have a problem with JC raising prices somewhat. Thoughts?

No bird at all, just speculating everything will increase. Hopefully not the case, but I don’t count on it.
