Open the caseback.
In the inner case back, you will find the model number.
On the movement, you will find the serial number.
Use the serial number to date it.
Bingo!

For the next couple weeks or so I’m wearing my
Rip curl Detroit automatic , found it at a pawnshop
Rather serendipitously after seeing it on line an hour prior
It’s probably one of my most favorite watches.
It’s a ridiculous 50mm in diameter but as my wrist is nearing
8 inches I can wear it comfortably

Both. I've purchased both M-1944 and Bakelite in 18mm. The OD strap had metal keepers and the Bakelite had canvas.
