The width across under the arms is 21 1/2". It is 41" around zipped up if I try it on ...

I don't think it's a 42.

Agreed, most likely a 40. Very occasionally I have seen originals marked 42 with a 21 1/2 pit measurement. Of course it all depends precisely where the seller measured from and how accurate he is. I remember once buying an A2 jacket with a 40" chest measurement according to the seller which was actually a size 48!
