confusing tatoo

have a look on his tatoo

if i have good eyes, i see ........ US AIR and more than probably FORCE
but where is the ARMY ?
this photo is dated 1942

The image/photo quality suggests to me it's quite a lot later than 1942 and in particular the ear defenders actually look quite modern!

That photo is from the 7th July 1941 issue of Life so it's actually prior to US involvement in WWII. Sorry can't help with the tat.
