Another question about MONARCH NO. N383s-80667

Hi Folks,
A quick question about the wind-flap, as per the amazing reference here, it was stated that "the wind flap ends 1 inch short of the bottom of the jacket". In my jacket, the distance is different, shorter than 1" can be found. Is it just something odd, or all is good [usually any mil-specs allow small differences, and I believe it is just a one here]?

I'm so positively surprised by how thick the leather is on this contract. This will be another wearable g1 [after this summer].

Picture before reconditioning of leather, work in progress, slowly leather is getting softer...but this requires more work than on the thinner hide.

None of my M422-7823D jackets have a wind flap 1" from the bottom. All are very near the bottom.

There are many idiosyncrasies found from jacket to jacket in the same contract by the same maker. We tend to focus on these differences because we are part time collectors, historians and keepers of these artifacts. War time production however never had the exacting standards back in those days that we tend to focus on today. There are photos throughout this place of war time jacket productions with wonky misaligned everything. Pockets, collars , zippers .
No one really cared as each sewing machine operator had their own little tricks or ways of sewing things together.

I have all of the USN specs from M422 thru 7823D in case you need them.

What source said windflap ends 1 inch from the bottom? How do they "know" that? Here are a little of a few pages from a very few.

Hey B-Man2,

Thanks a lot, I was assuming that some minor difference is a common thing. Saw that in general, this Monarch contract has usually a wind flap that ends 1 inch short of the bottom of the jacket [what various examples confirm]. If remember correctly even mil-spec for g1 allows minor differences in measurements. Especially during tough times, speed is more important than accuracy.

Each spec..M422, M422A, AN-J-3, 55J14, 7823, A,B,C,D lists the details of the materials requirements, property marks thread types, button sizes etc.

Naturally each maker had its own freedom for pocket flap shape, throat latch shape, windflap shape, pencil pocket shape, Stencil color, lettering style and placement until the perforations on windflap came with the 7823.

Hey there,
the Monarch i own shows the windflap as you describe it. Seems to be a feature of this small contract.
Cheers

Exactly, this is a characteristic feature for this contract. Based not only on reference, various pictures of n383s-80667 confirm that it is not an aberration. Thanks Cyril!
