always liked them but is this worth a spin?

Spearhead Militaria specialises in average quality, made in China, mostly German reenactor gear.

At $279.00, I think No.

WTF is an A-9 Jacket from the same seller..??

Oh dear .... since the trousers issued with the B-10 jackets are TYPE A-9, he seems to be making up this crap.

The Type A-9 flying jacket was the pre-production of the USAAF B-10 jacket, which was issued to very limit units in early 1940s', the main difference of the 2 jackets is the A9 jacket was made out of the dark olive color ply combed cotton twill while the B-10 was in olive drab stain dreill.

Our A-9 flying jacket featured with the dark olive cotton twill material, the Alpaca and Wool Pile Undyed Natural Color lining, and the 1/2 Inch Shearing collar, it come with a 1940 style left open brass black oxidized front zipper, and the correct type buttons and snaps.

Hell...

That is a rare repro then! I might even do it!! If not for the decal on the white collared B-10 I would certainly consider
it. I think a Vintage Production/MASH decal/transfer could jazz up the A-9! Good to see someone having a crack at the
more obscure stuff What Price Glory do not even do yet though!

Dunno Dave. Maguire and Conway refers to the A-9 jacket as a predecessor to the B-10. They have some two pics in their book, and say that "little is known about it".

Just won a spearhead B-10 on the bay. They will on occation put up B-10's for bidding at a starting price point of 99.00. I won at 99.00. I am very pleased with the constuction, fabrics, and fit. I my view worth about 200.00. I will post pics as soon as possible.

Oh okay ... I don't have that book, instead relying on Combat Flying Clothing. It describes the Type A-3, and A-4 as whipcord flying jackets intended to replace the A-2. Then the Types A-5, A-6, and A-7 that were commercial fabric jackets, service tested, and declared obsolete July 1943. From there it's on to the Spec. AN-J-3.

So these A-9's .... they look just like the B-10?

Was that the 48? I was going to bid on it for the price alone. Good job!

I'll scan the pics tomorrow, but yes. Maguire and Conway's book says it had a 'stitched down' epaulette. They have pics of one jacket and the Spearhead repros look like it, a dark OD B-10. Just guessing, but maybe the A-9 was one in the series of prototypes that you describe before the B-10 was decided on?

Thanks for scanning, Ed ... yes, I can see where Spearhead got the idea, but B-10's vary in colour. and weave anyway.

A-3 through A-7 were all Summer jackets ...

Development began at Wright Field in October 1942 on an intermediate alpaca- and wool-pile flying suit, designated the Type B-10 jacket, and Type A-9 trousers, and a heavy alpaca-and-wool-pile suit, the Type B-11 jacket and A-10 trousers.

I'm still thinking confused with trousers.

Type A-9 are flying trousers. The Maguire & Conway books are full of inaccuracies, especially where cloth and nylon jackets are concerned.
