I just bought a Elgin A-11 watch. On the back it says:

    TYPE A-11
    Spec No. 9427834
    Ser. No. AM3-35444
    MFR'S NO 1783
    Ord. No W535 AC-34898
    ELGIN

What year is this? Usually the first 2 digits of the serial number is the date however this one does follow this rule.

Weird. I will know for sure when I get it. Maybe the guy messed up when he wrote down the serial number.

Yeah, i think he merged the F and 4 into an M and then wrote the rest of the serial number. I got this one quite cheap as it was advertised as aladies' watch from the 30s and there were only 2 bids. Supposed to be running strong and in excellent condition. I will post pics as soon as I get it.
By the way Clark your wristband is seeing some good use. Thanks again.

From what I've been told, the way to know how old the watch really is by checking the serial number of the movement, although I am sure over the year new parts have replaced old ones. This site: http://elginwatches.org/ has the serial numbers of the Elgin watches by year, so that, plus the date from the case, should give you a good idea of the watches age.

Let us know what you find.

    Thanks,
    -Jake
