Using what I've learned from this forum

I believe I can identify the model of this MA-1 from what I've learned here in the VLJ. Before I offer my meager tidbit of learning, is there more that can be known about it? :D BTW I love the style cap he's wearing. I ran across these LIFE photos a while ago, and I see others have reproduced them here, and their comments on them have been enjoyable.

Dean:

Assuming it is in fact an MA-1 (which is entirely possible), I believe you can ID it from these pictures.

Well . . . ?

It might not even be an MA-1? L-2B?

Not an L-2B as it has a wind flap ... Danny gave you a good clue. ;)

No eps, either.
But of course, these were taken years before the Sattelite contract "H" model.

Now your getting close.

There are two possibilities on this jacket. One of which you mentioned as a B-15D. Just a slight "modification" to that nomenclature and you have one of the possibilities.

The other is the only contract this manufacture had for an MA-1. ;)

No at Dobbs look at the wind flap. So it would have to be the first MA-1 or a B-15D mod. Also a date on the Life mag would help.

Gone, but not forgotten.
Lion Uniform is the first MA-1, with the pesky squared off wind flap.

Ah okay, circa 1960 ... ya didn't hot link, and I couldn't find them with a search.

I'm going to settle on a Lion 1957 MA-1...due to the dark knits. I think it's less likely a B-15D MOD. Going with my gut feeling. I could be wrong, I know. ;)

I see what you mean by "pesky", to say nothing of needing a haircut:

Dean,

It's either a Lion MA-1 or B-15D Mod. I don't know if anyone could identify the difference between the two without looking inside. I could be wrong though. Anyone else?

It looks like Maj. Carl A. Farmer hung onto his B-15 D (MOD). At first I was thinking it was a first series MA-1. The squared off wind flap was the norm for that series. But then I noticed the reverse zig-zagging on the wind flap. Also notice he has the plastic encased rank insignia that is a second or third choice favored here. The jacket is less than pristine and it may smell of cigarettes too. Truly a beautiful jacket just the same. He's probably a pilot of either a tanker or B-52 out of Walker AFB New Mexico. He looks very stressed out like his performance is being judged in a competition. There is also a scoring card on his lanyard. He was buried at Arlington in March of '66.

Didn't the Lion MA-1 have a zig-zag pattern stitch also on the wind flap? I no longer have my Lion, so I cannot verify. I do believe both had the same Crown zips too.

Yes, SAC destroyed a lot of careers back in the day. For a good look into the way SAC was back then, you need to see the movie "Gathering Of Eagles". THE most realistic movie about how SAC was in the day. ;)

I'm leaning toward the Lion MA-1 but it could very well be a B-15D Modified. The Crown peg-tooth zipper was used on both. There's something about the oxygen mask tab that suggests MA-1 to me. All 3 of the D Mods I've owned have tabs made of a flimsier nylon that appeared almost to have been added as an afterthought, while the early MA-1s use a heavier webbing that is stitched securely to the jacket as on this example. In my opinion the rank insignia is of no use to our analysis because it's a function of what was being worn at the time the photo was taken, not of the jacket's vintage.
