I know at the museum here the technical conservator uses a number of different solutions specifically designed for museum conservation Carl. Most of these kinds of things are used to consolidate condition for very old, water damaged leather, and even those with rot. They're also not the common, garden variety leather conditioners/dressings you'll hear bandied around here but very specialised museum conservation products. If you like I can find out for you?

Carl,
Perhaps you could clarify if you are looking to conserve for display or something else?

Start working in a leather conditioner of your choice for aesthetics. Then leave them on the display shelf and get some cheap rerpros.

I brought a pair of old boots back to life recently that had gone hard from bricklaying mortar and been left in a shed for 3 years plus. I got them wet, in a washing machine, reshaped, dried then applied Obernauf oil and wax, the result a wearable pair of boots again.
OK these weren't vintage so I didn't care if it didn't work but it has very well.

Those are bloody Red Wings! :oops:I would have definitely cared if it worked or not! In fact I would have used some rather less desirable boots to lay bricks in-in the unlikely event that I would do such a thing! :D
