RE THE FORUM PARTICIPATION

Enigma a while back made the comment about civilian jackets that there is no interest unless the jacket is military, and to which I replied that's a sweeping statement . I think the poster was enigma ,well the next day Ken at Aero leather Quoted me and made the statement well is he wrong ? . Or something along those lines ,well I have been thinking about what enigma and Ken said and have come to this conclusion .We have 3867 registered members of that in my estimation we have about thirty five people who post and participate .Which to me is very said ........................... nuff said . Burt you are in the top ten and go out of your way to bring us new and interesting food for thought .Then we have the show and tell who rarely give us any nuggets of solid info . Then there's the rest best left alone this group I do not want to start anything .Guys we can do better than this surely ,lets puts some more effort in the new year please .

I get what you’re saying, but this is the reality of any specialist interest forum really, and tbh any group that exists in the physical world as well (I’m part of a history society that pre-covid met monthly, we had hundreds of registered members, but usually only around 20-40 would turn out for the monthly meetings).

I don’t post a huge amount compared to some and whilst I will check out the forum weekly, some times I just have ‘real life’ going on. I also tend to only discuss things that interest me, so for example if there’s a discussion going on about the latest 5 Star offering (seems to be every other thread; no dig intended, just an observation) which is of no interest to me I won’t get involved.

I was thinking this was going to be a kudos to all the recent participation. I feel like maybe a couple years ago this place was in a real lull compared to when I joined a short 8 years ago, Ive been digging all the activity regardless if its the usual suspects :)

You get out what you put into it ,which from where your coming from is where 99% of the forum is at . So with that said when you get interested in another jacket type hopefully the info will be there or maybe it will not be .But the expectation is you hope someone else is going to do the work for when its needed .I am not pointing the finger at you 917-k but you are stereo typical . And as that most celebrated Meister of the jacket world succinctly said PAY SHIT GET SHIT .Seem to aptly apply to the forum if it were to have a full physical .
Sad but there it is !. back to standing in front of mirrors is about all we can seem to muster .

Well, I take objection to the assertion that I’m ‘stereotypical’: looking back over my posts I’ve more frequently given information or shared content than I have asked for something.

I’m just pointing out the reality of any niche interest group: there might be thousands of members, but it’s all but inevitable a handful will contribute. Is that even a bad thing? If every member was constantly posting the reality is the board would probably be clogged up with all manner of garbage posts and topics.

I think that the 'civilian jackets' are positioned at the extremes ends of the spectrum, cost wise. Unless you are looking at a spunky Aero, Himel or a Thedi then there is little 'Like' input. I think EVERYONE here loves a well made, well fitted jacket 'irregardless' of the era, maker or cost. To put new jacket by maker X ahead of a stunning jacket by maker Y based on X vs Y mentality is where I see the issues. I have had three 23380 jackets by the one maker and only one to make it to keeper status..... The other two I would not have paid peanuts for...

The one and only time I tried to buy a civilian style jacket, I got burned by 'RedSox78' here on the forum. I think that the A-2, G-1 and B-XX types are just generally like minded....

A great jacket is a great jacket... think I have said that before....

Interesting conversation and a subject I’ve often thought about commenting on but thought it might be a sensitive area, so I left it alone . Jeff had the insight to address the problem and kudos to him for doing so . My take on this is that I think the focus of the conversation should be on what are people interested in and what can be done to draw more people into the mix. I certainly get that not everyone likes or is interested in certain subjects and we do have a tendency to retrace our steps time and time again . Having been here awhile, Ive seen the same jackets and heard the same questions time and time again . Everything from what jacket is being worn for the 20th time, to a newbys question of what’s the best color A2 to buy, russet or seal? But I know that it’s a new guy asking and I want to try and be as nice to him or her as some people were to me, when I was a newby and asked some boring repetitive questions . It’s part of the unspoken agreement for being a member of this place . You sign on , you ask questions , you accumulate knowledge and then you pass it on in hopes that down the road that person sticks around long enough to do the same thing . So ...back to the question of what would members like to see posted on this forum that would hold their attention and be interesting enough to make them want to get involved and post more? There’s a shit load of knowledgeable people here with a wealth of experience and insight into this hobby . In the past we’ve had reviews of jackets , comparisons of jackets and personally I think that the history of certain manufactures of jackets is kind of interesting. But unless more long standing members with the “cooperate knowledge” step up, things will remain a little dull and boredom will set in. We need a “suggestion box” of things people want to learn about, but that isn’t enough. Once the suggestion box is filled we need a few people to take the initiative to take on a few suggestions and make the effort to take on a subject and post a response .
As the newer guys become knowledgeable they will then be in a position to give back to the forum . Anyway just my take on the issue.

I think the 'Search' function is under utilised as well. I don't know how many jackets I have recalled owning after a data dive into the past. I remember jumping on here in 1997 with a dial up modem on my parent's 'computer', whatever that was.. Slightly older than the one I have now. ;)

The internet expanded my access to reference books that I would only ever thumb through at a gun show or themed book shop in Melbourne on a rare spare day of leave. The number of websites expanded and the input grew. We are BLESSED with the resource here. I know Facebook has a wealth of pages for jacket enthusiasts; however, they get political and agenda based really quickly and admins have the final say. We are very fortunate to have an affable community here and the only member here attempting to 'profit' from the experience is doing so with the blessing of the community for his attitude, enthusiasm and professional approach to giving US what WE want.

There was a lull in activity for a while; however, I think the current traffic volume has never been more beneficial, productive and informative.

Well you said it yourself you do have a life and most things on the forum do not interest you . so the stereo typical stands because your similar to most other members its not meant as a criticism its just a reality of the group I get it . That's why the group will never become the resource it could be . Ok I take out the stereo type out of the equation and put in I come here when I am bored or have nothing else to do . Which is OK because when you join there are no expectation required of you or none expected . Re the Five Star I have learned more about A2 jackets because of Five star ,because the jacket has been held under the microscope by many members . I also think more members are able to have a say in what the jackets should look like and the labels and on and on . This is my way of looking at things your way is different am I right and you are wrong of course not my statement are about what it could be but that will never happen not with just a few people leading the charge .

I am newbie to the forum I feel I participated since I have join and have benefited from your help and advice.

It's difficult when you first join to know what to post and frankly a bit scary to post on a site were members are so knowledge.

Its a real good place however I think I would befit from general help and advice thread were newbies can ask for help

Can I have a waffle?

Not wishing to blow my own trumpet [yet again ...but I will] I was involved in newsgroups - who remembers them?

Running email contact groups - remember them? Now almost a thing of the past after providers introduced ant spam measures many years ago? Back in the 90's we had large groups of veterans, historians, museum folks etc in daily contact via email where messages were sent and cc'd to everyone on the list.

Administrating and moderating forums - including some big ones with many thousands of members, forums connected with hardcopy publications etc

Latterly FB groups - specialist interest types.

The whole online interaction thing is cyclical. Always has beethey do ...and that they are right.n. Old timers sit in the background nodding sagely or tut tutting at at newbies asking the same questions they themselves have heard 100's times before ...or perhaps they themselves asked 20 years ago. Egocentrics burst onto the scene giving the impression they have all the answers ...and rarely failing to tell everyone that they do. No matter what the subject nutters argue just because they can over the least important little thing. Angry people get angry. All human life is here regardless the subject matter.

Overriding all that the sensible, balanced types will listen, digest, learn and research for themselves then pass on the knowledge gained with humility, dignity and without showing contempt to those who they perceive may know less. Sadly that has not always been the case here.

Group hug?

BTW my own interests are wide and eclectic, I love discovering new things. Listening to stories, meeting new people. Fortunately this forum has enabled that ...those that niggle me get blocked lol!

My 0,1ct ranting!
1) why do we have a reaction score figures N# what for? never undestood it anyway... guess I am not the only one ... Poor me I have 3x more than some mods? ( real or self proclaimed).
2) this forum is called Vintage L.J.... lately very little vintage was discussed...or on sale here...
( we all know and experienced... selling outside of VLJ brings much more €€£•¥¥¥¥¥$$$ than within this forum.... many experienced it..).. so why no more here???
3) contributings on a great low cost reproducer .. very good... ( with all due respect for his achievements and the VLJ contributions ) is not everyone’s daily cup of tea.....again with all due respect.
4) Recently... many “how much is your mall jackets name” ...jackets inquiries poped in recently... 10 seconds memership...MODS?!!??. Dont want to contribute on that!!!any volunteer!?
5) my little side business!... I invested 180K Euro in patterns, stocks, equipment, social affairs, unpaid social security... etc...
Now some expect me to share knowhow or knownledge or resources just to allow a low cost ( do it yourself) reproduction to be materialized?!?!...
Dream dream dream dream ....
Ask Ken , John, David or BR or The Real MCc’s if they are happy to share an IKEA manual on
how to produce your own A-2, B-3 etc!!! Nuts!Nuts!Nuts!
6) My 0,1ct ranting again.. very little chance to sell anything more than 300 Euro here...( some rare exceptions ... for real good prime repros... )...all others are MISSION IMPOSSIBLE... according to reccords....
In my little side business a lot of super trade in jackets come in... but no real chance to sell them here...since almost everything here is only focusing on bargains and low cost and cheap...( the world had its share on cheap cheap cheap, and cheaper...no matter whats it really costs at the end ....).
Another un-contribution fact! IMHO.
7) for all “vintage “ members here... where is all the bleeding off gone? Very good guys , extremely knowledgeable... sacrificed in the name of.. no more vintage but just cheap and affordable for all.. just ask arround... see where they are right now...
“Vintage”? where? what?... no more!... just why the extreme expected contributions are laking ..
Just my little ranting and contribution about “laisser faire” contributing ...( or very little) for me in the “ex real “ vintage leather jacket forum...
Apologies if it sounds pathetic.
No intention to harm nor to polemic or hurt.... just my 0.1ct ranting.
Hope the new 365+++ days ahead bring some better!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

before joining, and to a large extent still, I feel my knowledge is inadequate to really further the flight jacket conversation. Therefore, I fall into the “show, ask, or “like” category, mainly with regards to repros. I think we all can only hope we’ve contributed meaningfully to the community when all’s said and done.
