Rat,

Not sure if JC is sending this one out yet. It is one of our new bovine hides. The original color is "brown", but this effect is reached with dye mixing and HWT. Plus light sanding for the "Combat Crew" look.

I second all of this. This Poughkeepsie looks amazing and the hide is extremely close to originals from this large contract.

Thanks Vic and Andrew. High praise indeed from these two collectors of originals!

That was indeed my goal. While I know some would say that finding the best leather in the whole of the entire world, is the goal.... I personally think my job is to find the best World War II leather, and leave it at that.

This is what I had hoped some jacket maker would do but as yet no one has.

It has been some 20 months since Gary Eastman published the original leather specifications
and original tests in his A-2 Identification Manual. For some reason there is a persistence for
using veg tanned leather.

Judging by their description Aerial Star are using a leather that is similar to the original leather spec's
(expect for the thickness which is slightly too thick) http://aerialstar.com/leather.htm

The box stitching on the epaulettes of your last two creations rolls under the shoulder seam. Is this on purpose to differentiate the Good Diamond/Diamond Wear versions of the contracts? Or just a preference of yours? I compared the Poughkeepsie and your Acme to other GW stuff... My BK Werber does the same... Did do my head in at first...

Sensational stuff once again. Keep 'em comin' Dave!!

I like how the box stitching on the epaulettes rolls under the seam. I have wondered why it isn't seen more in repros of certain original contracts.
Lovely looking jacket, Dave!

Gents,

The box stitching in question should fold under the seam on the Aero 18775 as well as the 21996, alas it is seldom seen on the Poughkeepsie (though there is one on eBay right now with one epaulet that way and one fully exposed) but I did do the folded version on this particular jacket. Not really a mistake, per se, just one of those weird nuances that can be seen and proof of the vast differences in originals!

DD that new leather is superb IMO
Ref the stitching,I think this is what makes this hobby so good, there are still things being discovered about the humble A2 even all these years after the last originals were being made
I have yet to see one with different shade threads as has been described in think in the original Eastman catalogue
Anyone seen that on an original?

Just as a quick proof of my earlier statements... here are several original Poughkeepsie Epaulet photos. These culled from the archives of one John Chapman.

Is it related to the size? It could be that epaulettes were made in generic lengths and cut shorter as needed for the size? If so, I would expect the smaller sizes to be the ones displaying some of the "X" folded underneath the seam.

Foster,

That could well be. But the other thing to consider is the HUGE variation in seam allowance, for the hidden stitch on the shoulder end. One seamer goes a little deeper, and this also explains the variation
In final sizing and measurements, even in the same 50,000 piece order! It's all nuance and definitely off if Vera and Mar-Ellen went drinking the night before! Lol
