Please explain the PM Outbox

I can't tell if the messages I'm sending are getting out in a timely fashion. I'll send a message or respond to somebody only to find my outgoing box has a message sitting in it...or two if there was already a message In it.

:?: Is this thing working right, or what ? How can I be sure that a message I sent has actually been sent and is not just stuck in the outbox?

Until the message is read it will remain in the outbox. You can see if someone has been online by clicking on their profile icon. Will you give you a date time group of their last activity.
