Probably to smoke and fly. Unfiltered cigs get hot halfway down.
There's a famous shot of the bombardier in the nose of. B-24 (IIRC) gettin' the last drag from a cig -- he didn't seem to need a stinkin' holder. ;)

I just wondered how he got rid of the butt? Just crushed it (and 100 others) on the floor?
