New Goatskins From France

Gents,

Another big announcement... after a rather exhaustive search, John and I have just received our first shipment from a new tannery in France. These goatskins are absolutely AMAZING. 3oz Veg Tanned with a semi-aniline finish that looks suspiciously like WWII hides. Dense and with a great hand, but still extremely soft to the touch. This is an order shared by John Chapman and myself, so the numbers of jackets that can be produced will be limited.

We are definitely ramping up for the Fall here, and while I know its hot as hell in most of the country... be ready!

glad to hear it. I have purchased not a one jacket this year, maybe its time to think about it..............

going back and forth between something you/JC offer vs. another wearable original.................

well, I did actually order a nylon jacket this year that I had to return so net result still zero............

Dave, your French tanned goat looks fantastic. How many jackets do you think you will be able to make using it?

when/do you guys have the dark DARK seal like the CBI jacket you made of Foster a few months back? Was that a hand dye job? thanks -

looks like this goat is not G-1 dark?

looks good in any case

Also spied your Japanese horsehide post. Great work!
It's a bit hard to gauge from just the small sample picture above, and while there'd be no doubting your assessment of how good this goatskin is... it appears as if the French goats are pampered animals, the grain looks almost too uniform. Perhaps that's what happens when you raise the goats on brie & champagne!

Seriously, though, what is it that the French & Japanese do - or don't do - to produce such choice goatskin & horsehide respectively?

I wish I knew, and could tell American tanneries what the HELL those foreigners are doing to the hides, but it is swell!

First look at the new Goat as used in a new Cable for our own Steve Bailey....

Darkest Goat is on the way and should arrive any day now. Yes the one for Foster was indeed hand dyed steerhide. This particular hide is absolutely dark enough for certain M422a types, but not as dark as the later G-1 stuff, no.

That Cable looks sweeeet Dave, Steve will be most chuffed. Oh boy that's tempting... and that's from someone who said only a few weeks ago that he was happy with what was in the stable. And I wonder what JC will craft with his share of that goatskin? How's a guy supposed to resist? :D

Dave,

You got any examples to show the color differences in both of these fine leathers? That russet seems borderline seal, but in all the best ways. the 27798 is so classic in seal, but I keep thinking it'd be equally nice in this russet (with the burgundy knits, and OD chain zipper :D )

Greetings!

That leather sold out in just a few weeks. We have not been able to get a restock of it as yet! It will be done soon. Focus has shifted to HH, as no matter how much we assure people about goat and steer use, everyone wants horsehide. But weirdly the goat all sold out! Lol!

It's not hard to figure out why it sold out so quick. I received an order of that goat this week & it blows anything I've found domestically clean out of the water! Some amazing looking hides!

Yep! Some would say that it's a bit soft but I'm a huge fan as it is certainly closer to what WWII leather would have felt like when new.

Restock will definitely happen.

Keep us posted, Dave. Gives me more time to save up!

I like the veg retanned stuff. Pure veg tanned on goat can be rather rigid
