NAVY sheepskin

THe pants are in amazing condition but the unfortunately the jacket is a goner and looks like it is cracking from everywhere. Looks like the jacket was barely worn but suffered from inadequate storage condition. A shame.

Makes you wonder why the Navy ever gave up the horsehide AAC type winter gear from the early 30s. Probably way too costly and heavy when wet, but would have withstood a marine environment a lot better.

Was a lined goatskin suit ever tried?

Well of course THIS isn't goat (except for bindings and pockets).

Just wondered whether the Navy ever TRIED goat for lined, winter flight gear...???

What's significant about the rotted Navy sheepskins is that the problem is not restricted to jackets from a single maker; indeed, it seems to have happened to every maker's jackets. So at the moment we looking at salt water as being the likely agent of destruction?

Hard to imagine what else it could be, unless it was a faulty spec for weight, tanning, etc., that was never corrected.

Probably no one has ever even stopped to think about this before (at least not in the English speaking world  ), which gives you an idea of how little attention has been paid to this gear.

The AAF jacket were also afflicted by this. The ANJ4 was exactly the same and the B-3 was not that much better.
