jacket fade

it's Groundhog Day with a side order of eggshells again ;)

My somewhat eclectic and varied career path includes involvement in the conservation and restoration field. Believe me recreating the appearance of age and wear to match an original item, or piece of an item, is entirely possible, however it takes experience and skilled hands and a good eye. Look at some of the physical effects that pass through costume departments involved in various productions for examples of both good and bad work.

As far as repro jackets are concerned, if you are not experienced or a specialist in artificial ageing, restoration etc the oft repeated advice to 'wear the crap out of them' holds true. Wear it all the time, outside, inside, at work, doing chores - you name it - and don't sweat it when the garment takes on character. Leaving in the sun to catch some ultraviolet is fine as long as a check is kept to make sure the leather is not drying out or otherwise being adversely affected. If someone wants to experiment with this or that solvent, dye or abrasive etc in an attempt to reproduce the appearance of a 150 / 80 year old piece that's fine too, it's their property but be prepared for the potential for a cock up resulting in permanently shrivelled hide, holed, ruined materials or appalling and irreversible finish.

On the other hand if maintaining a pristine appearance is desired wear the garment selectively and with care.

Steve,

If I am not mistaking, you actually do have a pre-faded jacket in your collection, your Norshor Aero. Mark's work with his fading effect is very convincing, especially the overspray effect.

I wanted to post in this thread a photo of one of my Dubow, the jacket that I often wear and have not babying it. It shows a very beautiful fade but it turned out to be very difficult to show it in the photo. The eyes sees, but the "eye" of the camera sees it differently. Perhaps need to choose some particularly cloudy day for a photo shoot.
