Yes it is a redye but, I think the that the outcome will be the same as my jacket is similar to a redye with the reddish overcoat being applied over the russet hide.
sorry but this is clearly a re-dyed jacket

yes, it does work. laid flat on one side and then turned over remembering to lay the sleeves so they are flat seam to seam so as to not get a fade line down the center of the sleeve. gotta watch out for heat, as the heat can shrink the jacket. currently, im doing the sun treatment on the rw 1401 that I traded for with jan. its coming along nice and subtle. many originals faded with use in fighter aircraft.
At least the weather is cooperating if you’re inclined to try this. It’s so friggin hot down here and the sun has literally faded my BBQ Grill cover from dark black to a light gray …… Damn!! that’s hot.

I see no reason why it wouldn’t work. Haven’t come across anything yet that doesn’t fade in the sun. Except my own hide. I was going to say watch it doesn’t dry out, but you’ve got lots of humidity in that part of the world.

I’ll bet if that Shelby was black you could fry up steak and eggs on the hood;)

yeah, like petroleum jelly of the month club. As for the jacket, I could see some fade occurring in war time use. Especially fighters doing bomber escort at high altitude. But I think most of the colour loss and character would be from abrasion. Mainly safety harness, parachute harness. Mae West etc.

My only fear in this whole thing, is that I might wind up with a Pink Aero 21996 when all this is all over .
I basically did this treatment on a DD aero 21996, I wore it in NZ for 18 months pretty much every day where the uv index far exceeds that in UK. When I wasn't wearing it, it was usually left about in the sun anyway, sometimes purposely. It aged an absolute dream! Could be mistaken for an original. I'll post some pictures as soon as I can. The finish faded, intially slowly but the really took hold and tye wear became quite extreme.

I tend to agree with you but the best I can do at this point in my life is to cinch my cars seat belt and cross strap down tightly.

That’s what I’m hoping for and I’d really enjoy seeing any photos of your DD. Do you have any before and after shots ?

Humm...I'll take a look, but I think I just have some during the process not before I left. Although it it the steerhide chrome tanned, semi aniline finish hide.

Eh, even just after pics would be fine.

I remember elc had a time worn process. Not sure what it entailed.
They still do. Not sure, but I’m pretty sure UV isn’t involved. Britain’s climate wouldn’t allow it.

Even flying today won’t do it. Modern belts are like car seatbelts. Very tight weave nylon and non abrasive. Imagine if car seatbelts were like the thick rough belts they had in the aircraft back then. Everyone would have holes worn through their clothes and calluses on their left tit. Or right tit across the pond ;)

I’m sure it will be cool regardless.

I'm pretty sure the grain that developed on the left shoulder of my 1401 is due to my seat belt.

Then again, I was driving a Mazda MX-6 turbo back then and wasn't shy about using the turbo. ;)
