Many questions to you all, and guess there are some specialists here:

How common are Irvin painted jackets?

Also, do you have some ideas of nice artwork on british (and Commonwealth ones) planes?

Simonsen book is worth reading?

Can't say I have ever seen art on an 'Empire' jacket....

I've got photos of painted Irvins. Most of them are RCAF or from Norwegian squadrons in the RAF. I can dig some out, scan and post them if anyone is interested.

Definitely a little toned down and not as colorful as many of the US jackets were.

That one is interesting because the silver fern and NZ are pretty much the same design as the national badge used on "The Invincibles" All Blacks rugby jersey during the 1924 tour - a rugby tour that held almost mythical status in NZ at the time (and afterwards I might add ;-)
