Help please , dont know where to look !

I'm currently working towards a project here . It's an AAF 35mm projector . The case needs work to bring it back to its former glory , but to do that I'll need to strip off some of the original covering "fabric" but I'm at a loss as to where to find the correct material to replace what will no doubt be unusable .
If anybody could help in any way ??

it looks like a material that was painted over. why not feather in material of the weight and weave, and paint it and the rest of the case to match? also, it looks like the backing was-is card board.

The photos shown are of a cased AAF Type C2 projector I already own .
It's a wooden case , probably plywood at an educated guess .
