Help identifying a painted A-2 I found a few days ago

Hello! I found a painted A-2 jacket a few days ago. At first the elastic and zipper were throwing me off but then I realized they were probably replaced somewhere along the line. It has the original United Carr snaps on the pockets and collar. I’ve been doing some research online but I’m not seeing many Sherpa lined jackets. Any other info on this would be much appreciated.

Hi
Your jacket is a commercially made leather jacket . It’s not an A2 or a military issued jacket . However, there’s a possibility that it could have been a private purchase jacket used by a service person, but that’s doubtful. My opinion is that it’s a post war 1980-1990 commercial jacket that the owner had painted.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Can someone explain what details give it away as a commercial jacket? Just for future reference so I know what to look for. Thanks

1. milspec or original A2 jackets never had "handwarmer" pockets but just the 2 outter pockets with the flaps and press button
2. milspec A2 the backpiece of the jacket is always 1 single piece but not with that horizontal seam that your jacket has
3. liner was cotton but not artificial fur
4. knitting looked different from what you got on your jacket

Well this is just a quick summary of things that literally jump into someone's eye when seeing the jacket - the specialist will have plenty of more details to look for when trying to distinguish "real" from "wrong"

Well the jacket from the original post is now on Ebay, so I’m not so sure how much the original poster is genuinely interested in learning about these for their own benefit? Maybe I’m wrong.

If the forum is ever short of cash maybe we need to start charging for an appraisal service, for all these one time posters that pop up asking “what’s this worth”, “how rare is this” etc etc.

Maybe after they realized its not what they hoped, they are selling.

Who knows. If I’m being cynical, I suspect a lot of these people who pop up on here have a leather jacket they’ve found at a house clearance, yard sale, estate sale etc and they’re hoping to sell it on, but aren’t experts and have no idea what it is and what it’s worth. We tell em and off they go.

It’s a shame that 99% of what these one time posters show is utter crap. Why can’t someone come along with a mega rare named and painted A2 and I can just tell em it’s a worthless mall jacket, but I’ll gladly give em 100 bucks for it.

Well, in any case, this guy at least said hello and thanked after he stuck the stick in our anthill. Which is rare these days - deserves a discount in consult ;)

Like the recent and often repeated example "I just found this old motorcycle jacket and would welcome info on it and an idea of what it is worth"

Then in another thread in another section - but not the buy / sell area because of the posting restrictions for new members - "I am looking for x amount for this jacket if anyone is interested?"
