Wiki said Ferguson of Oklahoma was a military contractor, it also says that Schott was a contractor. Previous discussions on the forum said that neither of these manufacturers had military contracts. Is there a website that has an accurate list of contractors for navy G1 type jackets ?

ps - the original owner of the Ferguson jacket told me, it was a personal purchase at the MCCS Camp Lejuene PX in 1976.

Why is it 2 of the recommended books about flight jackets are in Japanese ? Are they more discriminating than English reading aficionados ?

I wrote the part of the Wiki article with the contractors, and the only contractors that I listed are those for which I have seen the tag and the contract number. I have a photo of the tag for each contractor and contract that I included in the list.

I have a list of contract numbers on my other computer and I can post them when I get over there. I don't represent the list as comprehensive, but because of the evidence I require for my list, if I have a contract the books don't have then the books are incorrect.

I think the problem with varifying Ferguson as a contractor was that the Ferguson and Imperial Leather contract numbers were the same. Am I correct about this? As I recall the Ferguson tags looked otherwise correct for the mid-seventies.

Thanks for the list...it kinda confuses me insofar as Schott and Ferguson of Oklahoma were on your list, and there's those who doubt whether they actually were had military contracts. What does (WP), (AS) and (AER) mean ? Are these types of jackets ? Or are these contracts all G-1 type varients ?

Tom, this is great info. Thanks for posting it. But I'm sill confused as to why Ferguson and Imperial would have the same contract number. Are they the same company?

Also, you may have a typo. The green highlighted Brill contract appears as a 1971 C-series jacket, but I think the D-jackets were well under way by then.

I believe 1967 marks the end of the C series. Also I believe Switlik Parachute had a small contract for the M422 jacket....Great listing, Thanks!

Great list Tom ... but I'm not sure about the books are incorrect part. I imagine that anyone compiling a list will have seen labels, but how do you tell that the labels are correct?

With recent reproductions, like my McCoys Sportswear 7823, with its bogus contract number ... it's obvious. But with earlier jackets, like the Ferguson/Imperial, how can you be sure that the Ferguson isn't a repro, or a civilian jacket sold by Imperial under another brand name?

And here's an example from the list showing another identical contract number ...

Regarding duplicate contract numbers, I've seen this with military radios too.

Ex R-388 receiver

Collins 3357-PHILA-52
Hallicrafters 3357-PHILA-52

All of the receivers were made by Collins but Hallicrafters used some to fulfill a contract for a communication system.

Also subcontracting for the R-390A. Tags say

Collins 14214-PH-51-93
Motorola made for Collins Radio 14214-PH-51-93

Also on the R-390A, contract 35064-PC-62
appears under the name Amelco and Teledyne, and it is known that Teledyne acquired Amelco.

The R-390A was too darned expensive to knock off, so these contracts are legit.

I'm not a doubter, I'm a newbie to contracts labels. I have G-1 jackets with the same labels you do.

I was told by others that the labels didn't necessarily mean there was a military contract to go with it, i.e. Schott makes a black label (civilian sales) and a white mil spec label. Even though properly labeled, I was told it was not necessarily a gov contract, even though the Schott rep asserts Schott had gov contracts. btw- my Schott G-1 looks like it's made out of cow hide rather than goat.

On Schott's message board, when asked, " Is this a military G-1?", the rep replied:
We did do government issued jackets on several government bids. The label in the military issued jacket has much more information on it including the contract number, spec number with the jacket size directly on the main label. At the bottom of the label it states the jacket was made by Schott, the label is white with black print . Gail

Military labels are on a white tyvek material with black print. The label will describe the item, as follows:

Jacket, Flyers, Intermediate, type G-1
Size
mil spec # Mil-J-7823E (AS)
Name of Manufacturer
NSN #

Companies definitely use old military contract labels on civilian market jackets.
Orchard sell these G1's on ebay for $110 USD / £67 GBP and are making them now.

I agree, but the fact is that Orchard was a military contractor and they recycled the mil. label for their civie jackets. It wasn't that they used a mil label and never had a gov contract. btw- great deal on that Orchard, looks great. If i hadn't been bidding on a Sefton and already have 8-10 G-1s i would have definitely ordered one for that price.

Simply put, they cornered the market early. They established flight jackets as a hobby and raised prices for the entire world during their economic boom 20+ years back.
They did much the same for selvedge denim, as the necessary machinery itself went to Japanese mills.
Some US issue flight jackets, especially 1930s items, were so rare and were bought up so early that no one in the West even knew they existed - a peculiar situation indeed, and one the information age is only now coming to address.

I am still not sure how you determine that a label is genuine.

Regarding the duplicated contract numbers, perhaps you could post pictures of the two I questioned ...
