The design dates back to WWII (original patch below), where it was used by VB-81. I don't have the correct reference material but I assume they changed their name over time as roles and aircraft evolved.

I’m at a militaria show in Florida and a guy walked up to my table wearing this shirt . He was a naval aviator who collects USN jackets . His name is John and I told him about the forum and he’s going to join us . Very interesting guy who has some great jackets .
