Reading today my copy of Roger Freeman's the Mighty Eighth War Paint &Heraldry and read that the 'Stubby 8' logo was created/designed here in the UK, and only officially amended latterly by the USAAF's newly created Heraldic Office around 1944!
Second fact I noted was that of the approx 278 group/squadron patches some 93 were never formerly approved!!

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Took me 3 years to get our new 48 Civil Engineer Squadron patch approved. For a "new" country that doesn't date back to thos chivalric years, the Air Force Heraldry Dept were very picky !

A lot were never officially recognised. The 4th FG's famous boxing eagle was never official during the war and afterwards was officially adopted by (what was then) the 334th FIS.
